Ebenezer Scrooge and his mean ways come in at the top spot this time around, which makes sense as it's high season for the corporates to come in and beat us up as we try and make our way back into the workforce. Looks like we'll have to cross our fingers that the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future are on our side - and that sooner or later we're all going to get paid. This marks the second issue in a row that an animated film has taken the top spot. Get those checkbooks out and start buying up shares of Pixar, that stock has nowhere to go but Up! (pun intended, but I'm sure you didn't catch that) Ok ok, so those of you who follow the market are right, and Disney already gobbled them up in 2006.

As it was a slow couple weeks of releases, I played the 'throwback' card and tried my luck at Couples Retreat which came out back in the beginning of October. A surprisingly fitting movie for all you Married But Available types out there. Here we have Vince Vaughn, Jon Favreau, Jason Bateman, Jean Reno, Kristen Bell, one of those chicks from Sex And The City, and the list goes on. Frankly, it was quite funny, even though the ending was a bit sappy and could have used a little more ruckus. In an attempt to save their relationship, Jason (Bateman) and Cynthia (Bell) strong arm their friends into taking a vacation in paradise. Little did they know it would turn out to be the island of 6am wake-up call hell, and that couples skill building sessions would be mandatory. Throw in an over-tanned and under-dressed yoga instructor named Salvadore going "Boom….. boom" on your wife while she's in downward dog, and sparks were sure to fly. There are canoe races, shark attacks, PowerPoint presentations, Faizon Love naked (photo included since I know you wouldn't want to miss that), and the almighty Guitar Hero one-on-one face off - on expert mode of course. Towards the end the gang ventures out of the safety of Eden West (the couples side of the island) to Eden East (the forbidden zone where scantily clad singles are partying like there's no tomorrow) in an attempt to chase down a runaway partner. But, rest assured, they make it back to Eden West, pass the course, and Joey (Favreau) gets his 'happy ending.' By the way, you consulting types will likely get an extra laugh out of this one - unless it has the post-college Office Space effect, and you realize how much you hate your life instead.

So what of last week's quote unquote "picks?" Ok, so a swing and a miss. The Men Who Stare At Goats, my dark-horse, turned out to be a cult movie at best. It starts off slow, with Bob (Ewan McGregor), a small town reporter, having his wife break up with him for his 1-armed editor. But, this gets our good friend Bob on the move to Iraq, where he meets a Jedi Warrior. Don't like that term? Ok fine, we'll call him a Super Soldier. A man who had years of military training to become a psychic weapon. This man, Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), can find people across the world and stop a heart with nothing but his mind and some deep breathing exercises. These two embark on a mission, a mission, as it turns out, to release a bunch of locked up goats. They get kidnapped by terrorists, rescued by security contractors, almost killed by rival security contractors, discover a secret psychic military base in the dessert, and finish up by trippin' on some LSD. As you can gather, there were times where I unalmost fell asleep during this one, but luckily it did have a few funny moment to keep my eye's opened.

Rumors: So word on the street is that the Michael Jackson movie, This Is It, is not as bad as I would have guessed… but it's still less than good. I've been hearing things like, "started off well, but then I fell asleep for the second half," and "wow, MJ could really move for an old man, too bad it was totally creepy." But, none-the-less, the man changed the game, and defined an era. So to that I say,.. Respect.

Best bets on the Horizon: Alright, back to business, get your discount movie passes out and get ready to clock some time in front of the big screen. And speaking of discount passes, for all you rookies out there, you can probably buy discount AMC theater tickets from your apartment building. May be worth your while to ask the front desk; if not, I get mine at Costco, they come with a free large drink coupon. OK, on November 13th, we have 2012, a movie about the year 2012. Boring right? Oh wait, it's actually about the end of the world according to the Mayan calendar, and John Cusack and Thandie Newton star as the leads fighting to stop this apocalypse in what is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat. Want something a little lighter? Pirate Radio, with Philip Seymour Hoffman, is the story of an illegal British radio station relocated to a boat to fight for its freedom. This actually looks legit, and as you can imagine, is a comedy. November 20th, we'll call this weekend the weekend of niche films. Limited release of John Woo's Red Cliff, another martial arts war movie. Planet 51, an animated film about a bunch of little mini green Shrek's. Oh, and if you want something weird, Nicolas Cage and Eva Mendez will be starring in Bad Lieutenant… this will probably be stranger than Bangkok Dangerous, so think twice before seeing this one.

That about wraps us up. Big ups to my people who have landed jobs, you deserve it, nice work. And to the rest of us, yeah we probably deserve jobs too, but we're still waiting for the right opportunity to present itself now aren't we. Alright, off to tweak the font size on my resume. One love.
