HE SAID: You Call This Art?

A Comment About the "Value Add" of HC Artwork

Based on the new additions of "art" to the C-level at the HC, I decided to speak out a bit. Before I went spouting off at the mouth, I had my illustrious co-writer Ms. Teague give me the nickel tour of the HC's "art." What did I find? Well, I found that she knows some really big art words that make her look really smart; that I actually don't hate everything; and that I apparently have pretty strong opinions about what we have hanging on our walls (I know it may be difficult for those that know me to think that I would have strong opinions).

"Still Life with Carrot" AKA "Busted Trash Bag of Fruits and Vegetables with some Guy in Red Gym Shorts Photo Collage"

This was the beginning of my angst. I stroll on down the stairs from the WG at the beginning of this year and WHAM! I get smacked in the face with this "art." Seriously! The GSB spent money on this, and all the while, no one can use their computers at 1pm because our WiFi infrastructure is so crappy. The still life fruit… fine, whatever, it is a 14'x10' picture that just looks ridiculous, but I can tolerate it. But the random photo of some guy from naval to knees wearing red shorts is not "art." It looks like a picture that was taken on accident by someone learning to use a new camera.

"Poker" AKA "Untitled"

(Come on, we paid you, give the stupid thing a name.)

Near and dear to this Risk & Gaming Co-Chair is the "ART" of Texas Hold 'em. But just along the wall by the Student Programs and Events office (DSO for all you 2nd years), there is a piece of "art" that documents an artist taking the GSB's money, with which we had commissioned him, and getting his butt kicked at the Commerce casino. He got beat so badly that, instead of getting "art," we got some pencil drawing documenting his losses, which display the skill of something I did in 4th grade art class.

African Portraits

Now that I have those two off my chest, I can talk about some good art displayed in the HC. On the third floor, tucked away down a hallway that looks like the unbeaten path, hangs a photo series taken of some residents of a village in Mali. The photos are in focus, the subjects are interesting and engaging, and they are artistically done. I suggest you wander up and take a look for yourself.
