Etiquette at the GSB

A NOT To-Do List!

- Survey!

Issue date: 11/15/07 Section: Perspectives
It seems as though business school has brought many of us back to our undergraduate days and in some cases, high school days. In doing so it's easy to get caught up in this fanfare but we cannot forget the meaning of one simple word - respect. As such, we would like to remind our student body of behavior that is considered disrespectful to others. Below are examples of inappropriate behavior that has been noticed at the GSB:

Special Category: Juvenile Delinquency

- Stealing lunch boxes!!!!!

- Stealing from the student group room! Student groups pay for these items and they are for the benefit of their members! Don't steal!

- Stealing tables from students in the Wintergarden! Even if a Wintergarden table is only occupied by one person, it is THEIR table! Ask to take a chair, that's fine, or if you know them, join them. But do not walk up to someone you don't know, sit down, and then say, "Do you mind if a group of people stops by in a half an hour to do some homework?" Stealing is not cool!

GROUP Study Rooms & STUDY Lounge

- Booking a large study room for only two people

- Booking a study room for just one person

- Booking a group study room to watch sports or a TV show on the big screen with your friends

- Not canceling a study room booking if you are no longer using it

- Leaving your bags/books at a desk in the quiet study lounge for hours (when it is crowded) and not returning for a significant amount of time

- Eating a full meal in the study lounge - it's loud and it smells. Snacks are ok

- Not silencing your cell phone in the study room

- Answering your phone in the study lounge - walk outside and then answer

Classroom Misbehavior

- Monopolizing class discussions

- Asking questions in class that are completely off topic or overly specific to your interests/situation as this wastes the entire class's time.

- Eating potato chips in class and not realizing how much noise that bag makes
