To All GSB First Years:
Remember your life at this time last year? It certainly wasn't filled with mid-terms, internship recruiting, or juggling your academic obligations with every facet of your life. Instead, you were probably going through the challenging process of picking an MBA program. Remember the stress? Remember how significant the decision was? We certainly do.
One of the greatest characters of the GSB is diversity. We come from varying cities, countries, cultures, and careers. Some of us traveled thousands of miles to be here, others have been in Chicago their entire lives. We have people that left great business careers, as well as people who came from a number of non-business backgrounds like journalism, scientific research, music and art. Fundamentally, we are a tightly-knit group of diverse individuals sharing a keen appreciation for challenge, opportunity and academic excellence.
Coming to the GSB was a big change for all of us; it was a transition into an entirely new lifestyle. In the past 8 months we've made friends, built networks, shared stress, suffered through recruiting and gained invaluable insights into life and academics at Chicago GSB. We've faced the challenge of change, and have done so successfully.
Transition isn't always easy, it's always better when you have someone that can help you with the significant changes in your life. Change is always easier when you have someone to count on, when you have someone that you can consider a fundamental part of your "network" in your new environment.
At the GSB, we consider one of the first steps of establishing such a network is your involvement in the Mentor Program. The Mentor Program is a proud tradition at the GSB, and is a program in which Admits can select a Mentor from a pool of current First-Years. You are now presented with a great opportunity to be a cornerstone in somebody's network, to be a guidepost of sorts as they transition into this new phase of their life.
The Mentor Committee is looking for people who possess a strong interest in supporting the development of admitted students. As a mentor, you will be able to provide Admits with your insights about:
- Life in Chicago and at the GSB
- Being a successful student
- Succeeding in the recruiting/interview process
- Making decisions about personal, academic and career goals.
We encourage all of you to take advantage of this opportunity, and to build your own network as well as be one of the first and most significant transition steps for incoming students. Please be on the look-out in the next few weeks for further details about the sign-up process.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.
Best Regards,
Mentor Committee
