Chicago GSB took the 1st place in the Central Region VCIC (Venture Capital Investment Competition) held in February. The VCIC is a competition between top MBA programs, similar to a business plan competition, but in the VCIC the companies are real and the students play the role of the venture capitalists. Real start-ups participate and present their plans and companies, and then the "student VC teams" analyze the ventures and meet with the entrepreneurs for Q&A sessions. The student teams present their final investment recommendations to a panel of judges composed of real venture capitalists. The teams must provide valuations, term sheets, and rationale for investing in the chosen deal (in addition to justification for not investing in the other deals). The entire competition takes place over a three-day period that includes a lot of hard work and not much sleep.

Each participating school has some sort of a similar competition to choose their team that represents them in the regional tournament. The Chicago GSB competition was in January, with the winning team moving on to the regional competition. The Central Region VCIC was hosted by the University of Colorado. The following were the winners:
- 1st Place: Chicago GSB
- 2nd Place: USC
- Entrepreneur's Choice Award: NYU
The other teams that competed in the regional competition were Michigan, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin. The members of the Chicago GSB team were:
- Mark Buchanan '07
- Sam Kruger '07
- Richard McCormack '07
- Jason Starr '07
- Vineeth Subramanyam '07
The Chicago GSB and USC teams will move on to the international competition held in April, where they will compete against the 1st and 2nd place winners from the other regional competitions.
