As we search for a new head of the Leadership Effectiveness and Development Program, I am honored to partner with our LEAD coaches and 2006 Facilitators to deliver Chicago GSB's acclaimed LEAD curriculum.
We have made some changes this year that I wish to highlight:
LEAD as foundational component of a Chicago MBA: Building on the feedback we received from the Class of 2007 at summer intern roundtables and the consistent message that we heard from recruiters and employers on the critical importance of communication and interpersonal skills for career success, we strengthened our messages delivered during CORE about the value of developing the leadership skills taught and practiced in LEAD.
Grading: Mastery of giving and getting feedback, understanding and improving team dynamics, and enhancing one's presentation skills requires active student engagement. To increase students' incentive to develop their leadership potential, grading in LEAD has shifted to participation-driven evaluation from an attendance-driven metric. The facilitators and LEAD coaches are very pleased with the high degree of engagement we are experiencing under this new grading policy.
Program Updates:
* LEAD is partnering with Professor Luigi Zingales to enhance the leadership curriculum.
* New and more challenging cases have been added including LEAD All-Star cases to ramp up role-plays.
* The dreaded double-entry system for Chalk feedback has been eliminated.
Organizational Structure: Since its inception in 1989 LEAD has varied in its organizational structure. Recognizing the substantial experience of Tonya Fuhs-Wallach and the value for the LEAD program of creating a staff position to orchestrate the tactical dimensions of LEAD programming, effective July 1, 2006 Tonya was promoted to the resurrected position of Director of the LEAD Program. Coaches Chris Collins and Alice Obermiller and Assistant Director Jessica Kiragu and I are delighted to work with Tonya in her expanded role.
We hope to have a new leader of LEAD in place later this quarter but until then, the Class of 2008 is in the able hands of the 2006 facilitators and our terrific LEAD professionals.

When you get accepted in GSB and you go through the admitted student material, you become very excited about the LEAD program, the course that "will shape your leadership skills". (Continued…)
