As internship recruiting winds down, prepare to be surprised when you compare notes on your offers. As consultants anxiously await a summer of travel, bankers look for cheap digs in NYC, and marketers stare at their paychecks in disbelief, one GSB student whom we'll call 'Buck', has accepted the most exclusive job on campus. That's right, step aside Private Equity, there is a new kid in town.
"After two quarters of presentations, recruiting dinners and fake smiles," recalls Buck, "I began to wonder what I'm doing this all for." Instead of focusing on the near-term like many students, Buck analyzed the long-term value of the internship. "I began to look deep within - Should I really go back to the corporate world? Isn't there something more to life? Is a threesome with twins really that far-fetched?" says Buck. The result of this intense introspection led him to realize what he wanted all along. "Sex, food and money are my three passions," says Buck, referring to them as his pillars of motivation with remarkable candor. Buck began to research jobs that would position him well in the long-term, and has now landed the only job of its kind on campus. The job also satisfies two of his passions. This summer, Buck will join Adult Video Productions (AVP) as their first MBA hire with direct responsibility for growing the business by 200%.
Since accepting the offer, Buck has been on the receiving end of concerned remarks from friends and family who contest that he may not be using his MBA for its worth. Responding to such queries, Buck told Chibus "You know, it ain't easy to grow any business by 200%. For God's sake, there are so many options for customers and so many niche markets in this industry. How do we decide which one to pursue?" Drawing on a strategy lecture, he recommends "AVP should stick to a differentiation strategy, because everyone is a cost leader in this business." Buck also notes that the summer will give him experience with some of the latest technologies, M&A analysis, and a chance to exercise his entrepreneurial muscles. "Heck, proximity to hot babes and free porn doesn't hurt either," he adds with a chuckle.
Buck's bold move has encouraged many to follow their true dreams after graduation. Says Satyajeet Salgar, an editor of this paper, "Buck's courage to turn down lucrative consulting offers has encouraged me to do the same," as he eyes other opportunities for full-time.
