Chicago GSB Triumphs at the Annual GSB-Kellogg Olympics
Kellogg Gets A Whoopin!

Did Kellogg not know that they were no match for the athletic and drinking prowess of the GSB? This was the conclusion I reached after seeing a mere twenty of the purple northern folks attend this year's highly successful Chicago GSB-Kellogg Olympics. While it meant a landslide victory for the GSB, it was slightly disappointing that the effort put in to organize such a great day (a big thanks to Dan McKelvey!) was not experienced by more people.
For those of you who did not attend the Olympics, the best characterization that I can give you is that upon arrival at midday, everyone was given a school tee-shirt (great, I needed a GSB tee!), a wristband, and directions to the bar!
After the opening ceremony, activities were split into two distinct areas: those activities that involved drinking and those for which prior inebriation would cause interesting and humorous results.
Let's start with the athletic activities. The day began with a competitive volleyball match where Kellogg actually managed to field a full side (a feat that was not matched the rest of the day). Despite their preparation, they were no match for the mighty Maroons. Unfortunately, I missed the highlight of the match: Rashaan Early's majestic slide for the ball that was ultimately unsuccessful. Great to see the real GSB enthusiasm!
Soccer followed promptly (actually, while they were finishing the volleyball!). Kellogg was only able to provide eight players, so we magnanimously offered to fill out the rest of their team to at least have a semblance of real competition. As stand-in Kellogg goalie, I was able to witness first hand Avi Stopper's awesome hat-trick! Just for interest, I did make some saves, and the three goals were genuinely great shots. End result, 3-1 GSB.
At the same time, the GSB continued its winning streak with a victory in whiffle ball at the other end of the Midway, led by our very own fearless Jeter-esque MVP: H-Mon (Hans Montgomery).
Following these events were hula-hooping and dizzy bat. I made a strategic decision based on my lack of hula-hoop skill to excuse myself and head back to the Summer Garden (outside the Rothman Winter Garden). I witnessed GSB students explaining to the northerners about the fine art of flip-cup. Given the expertise of flip-cup MVP (according to Mr. Feret) Tash Austin, I knew that Kellogg was in for a long streak of consecutive defeats. This assessment held true, as time and again the drinking games resulted in a salubrious Maroon victory.
I could not quite comprehend what was happening. Kellogg prides itself on being the party school, yet here we were, drinking them under the table, again and again. Of course, with the likes of the G-Man (Steve Guberer) and our very own Jason "Rosengupta" Rosenthal, we were fielding our A-team. Even in these events, we had to substitute fellow Maroons to boost numbers ... of course we made sure these were our finest tee-totaling (Editor's Note: tee-totaling = non-drinking) representatives.
Heading back to the Midway I was able to hear stories about the Maroon successes continuing. I was just in time for the 3-on-3 tug-of-war. This was the only known loss of the day.
(Editor's Note: Kellogg won three events.)
The drinking finished with another bout of flip-cup, this time being a sixteen-per-side extravaganza. The GSB was again anchored to success by Tash Austin.
To finish the day, the entire Kellogg contingent, which was down to sixteen at that point, took on the best the GSB had to offer in dodgeball. After a lame attempt by yours truly to lead the GSB in a war chant, we lost the first of the best-of-three encounter. I take full responsibility. However, the mighty Maroons fought back with skill, aggression and beer-induced stupidity to take the next two bouts and secure yet another victory! The sight of the big G-Man in action was truly inspiring and surely struck fear in the hearts of our purple visitors.
The highlight of the afternoon was the camaraderie shown between the two schools' social coordinators after the dodgeball conclusion. The coordinators evidenced a close relationship that could only be the result of many hours spent together investigating and planning more joint extra-curricular activities between the two schools. Well done, Feret and Dan!
