New Places In Town

Another year, another resolution. Last January, I declared 2003 "The Year of Me." In hindsight, I'm not quite sure what I meant by that. I think some strange corner of my mind translated it as "Get manicures and pedicures as often as possible and drink lots of champagne." Yeah, not a great plan.

In keeping with my rhyming scheme, I've declared 2004 "The Year of More" and am loosely interpreting that to mean spend more time with friends and family. This might mean spending a lot of time (and money) in bars and restaurants catching up with people. Oh my!

Belly

3210 N. Lincoln Ave

Getting There: Belmont bus west to Lincoln; Lincoln bus north to Belmont; Brown Line to Paulina, walk south to Belmont.

The Victim: Friend from work, Kyra

TNDC Potential: Huge

The Scene: So Belly used to be this place called The Technicolor Kitchen, which tried really hard to be trendy, but failed. Plus, they didn't use their space very effectively, and you felt weird eating there because there was this huge void in the middle of the room. Well, Belly came in and got rid of all the wacky Technicolor walls and trendy interior design, and replaced it with that Irish-pub like stuff and exposed brick walls. However, they still haven't figured out to use the space well because that big void in the middle of the room is still there. On a Tuesday night when the place was empty, we felt like we were eating in the largest and most empty bar on the planet. It was weird. However, service was attentive and quick and our food was yummy, so I'll give them snaps for that. It was a pretty uneventful evening, to be honest with you. I'm a bit concerned by the fact that Belly is just two bars down from Fizz, one of my favorite neighborhood hangs, but the 'hood needed a new spot so I can't be picky about that. I just hope the competition doesn't totally adversely affect Fizz's business.

Overall Verdict: Worth a visit, but a pretty standard place.
