On Friday, the GBC and the second-year class hosted the first annual "Preparing for and Getting an Internship" information sharing event in the lobby of SSA. The internship search process is already off to a quick start this fall. This was a chance to take a step back, to ask some questions, figure out what the next steps to a successful job search might be, and to do some research about the companies that students are interested in.

With close to 100 volunteers in a variety of capacities and approximately 300 participants, this event was a real success. Over 75 students, representing more than 50 companies volunteered at the event and according to most accounts, talked with participants for almost three straight hours!

Scott Phillips, a first-year student, described the event as "an insightful and timely dose of straight talk on recruiting preparation and company information," which is exactly what the second-years were hoping to share. "My only regret is that I couldn't get there a little bit earlier."

The second-year students were impressed by what the first-year class shared as well. "It felt great to be able to share information with the first-year class and I was really impressed with both their questions and their energy level," said Caroline Ross, one of the second-year volunteers. "I'm really glad that they took the time to come out on a Friday afternoon, when they were already really busy, in order to take advantage of the time second-years had volunteered. I think I would have found this useful last year, to ask questions in an informal environment without having to worry about consequences."

Another volunteer pointed out that hard work can help people to overcome even a tough economy and that they see the work that many people in the first-year class are putting into their job search as a positive sign.

The event was planned not only to share information between classes, but also to build the connections between first- and second-years. Twelve months is not all that long - memories of the first time through the recruiting process are still vivid in many second-years' minds. It is exciting to cheer on the first-year class and many people wanted to do their part to help.

In the upcoming week, a survey will be sent to both volunteers and participants in order to identify what was done well on Friday, as well as to solicit suggestions for improvements, so that the event can continue to advance in years ahead.

Of course an event like this is not possible with extensive volunteer support. Special thanks go to everyone who helped out on Friday.
